Los Angeles International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Los Angeles International Airport lies about 24 km from the city centre and handles around 73.71 million passengers a year (2025). Like JFK, it has no single main building: nine terminals (T1–T8 plus the international terminal, TBIT) are strung out around a loop road. The one thing most worth updating here is your thinking: taxis and rideshares do not pick up at the terminal door — they all load at the LAX-it lot outside the terminals.
The nine terminals
| Code | Main carriers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | Southwest and others | Northeast corner of the loop |
| T2 / T3 | Delta and partner airlines | T2 also handles some international flights |
| TBIT | International airlines | Bradley International Terminal, where most intercontinental flights are |
| T4 / T5 | American Airlines and others | Linked to TBIT by a corridor |
| T6 | Several airlines mixed | Linked to T5 |
| T7 / T8 | United Airlines | West side of the loop |
How to work out where you are: check the operating airline first, then the terminal number on your boarding pass; international arrivals are mostly at TBIT, so confirm which building your onward flight uses before anything else.
Our diagram draws the nine buildings as separate structures on either side of the loop precisely to remind you: the buildings are joined by a mix of walking corridors and shuttle buses, and the time cost is not to be underestimated.
Getting between the terminals
- Walking corridors — T4–T5–T6 are linked by indoor corridors, and TBIT connects to T4/T5/T6 by an elevated walkway, so some connections can be made without leaving security.
- Free shuttle buses — every other inter-terminal move, and trips to LAX-it and the car rental centre, rely on the shuttle; count the interval between buses into your time.
Routes and flights
- Routes — around 80 airlines flying to about 110 countries and cities; long-haul points include London, Paris, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney and more, while the domestic network covers every major US hub.
- Flights — 73.71 million passengers in 2025 (about 23.60 million international, 50.11 million domestic), slightly below the 2024 peak as domestic traffic softened.
- Aircraft — main bases are United (T7/T8), Delta (T2/T3), American Airlines (T4/T5) and Southwest (T1); short-haul workhorse fleets are Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families, with TBIT long-haul using 777, 787 and A350 widebodies.
Getting into the city
- FlyAway bus — direct to Union Station (LA Union Station) and other hubs, with plenty of luggage space, and the most predictable option.
- Taxi / rideshare — take the free shuttle to the LAX-it lot first, then get in; at peak times allow an hour or more into the city.
- Metro — still requires a shuttle bus connection at Aviation station; the SkyLink people-mover linking the terminals had not opened as of September 2026 (targeted for late 2026), so do not take the "direct rail link" claim in older guides at face value.
- Car rental — the rental centre is well away from the terminals and is reached by shuttle in both directions.
Practical tips
- "24 km from the city centre" means very little in Los Angeles — congestion on the 405 and the 105 is the real time cost, so if you are pressed for time allow 90 minutes for the ground transfer.
- For an inter-terminal connection, pick a combination with a corridor where you can (TBIT to T4/T5, for example); for any other combination allow more than 3 hours.
- Arriving late at night, go straight to LAX-it for a taxi rather than waiting at the terminal kerb — only shuttle buses stop there.
