Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Atlanta's airport lies about 16 km from the city centre and handles around 106 million passengers a year (2025), long ranked first in the world. Its layout is exceptionally orderly: a single central spine threads seven parallel concourses lettered from T to F, with a 24-hour Plane Train running underground to link them all — so at Atlanta you almost never end up in the wrong building, only too far from your gate.

The seven concourses

CodeNameMain use
TMain concourseWhere check-in and security are, plus some domestic gates
A / B / C / DDomestic concoursesMainly Delta domestic flights
E / FInternational concoursesInternational flights, including long-haul from Concourse F

How to work out where you are going:

  • The letter of your gate is the concourse — check the letter before boarding the train, and do not get off at the wrong one.
  • The Plane Train is the core artery — the underground people mover runs 24 hours with trains every few minutes, linking T with all of A–F; a full run end to end takes about 10 minutes.
  • International flights are concentrated in E and F, and most domestic connections between concourses also rely on the Plane Train.

Our diagram draws it as a single spine with seven parallel concourses precisely to show that the cost in time here depends on how many concourses you cross, not how many buildings you change.

Transfers and connections

  1. Delta's home base — Delta connections run very smoothly here, usually achievable in around an hour.
  2. For a domestic-to-international connection (E/F), count the Plane Train ride in; allow 2 hours.
  3. The airport's traffic is enormous but the circulation is simple and clear — just follow the Plane Train signs.

Routes and flights

RoutesDelta runs nearly 1,000 peak-day departures to 207 destinations worldwide (61 international), covering the US domestic network plus Europe, Latin America and Asia
Flights807,625 total aircraft movements in 2025, second in North America and among the world's highest

Getting into Atlanta

  • MARTA rail (red / gold lines) — the station is on one side of the main building, about 20 minutes direct to the city centre with very low fares; the recommended option.
  • Taxi / ride-hailing — about 16 km, picked up at designated points; the freeway is noticeably congested at peak times.
  • Car hire — the rental centre is reached by people mover and is one of the largest airport rental facilities in the United States.
  • Airport buses — serving the city centre and the surrounding areas.

Practical tips

  • Atlanta is the world's busiest airport, so err on the generous side with connection times: for a connection crossing three or more concourses, allow 1.5 hours.
  • MARTA's operating hours are limited, so have a taxi or ride-hailing plan for a late-night arrival.
  • After an international arrival, a domestic connection means clearing immigration, collecting your bags and passing customs before security and bag drop again; allow more than 2.5 hours.
