Auckland Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Auckland Airport lies about 21 km from the city centre and handles around 19 million passengers a year (2025), making it New Zealand's largest gateway. Its domestic and international flights are split across two separate terminals, linked in two ways: a 950-metre green walkway and a free inter-terminal shuttle — the one place in the whole airport where you need to allow connecting time.

The two terminals

NameMain flightsNotes
International TerminalAll international flightsThe main building for arrivals and departures
Domestic TerminalNew Zealand domestic flightsSeparate from the international terminal; linked on foot or by shuttle

How to work out where you are going:

  • International flights use one building and domestic flights the other — there is no complicated airline-to-terminal mapping to work out.
  • On foot — follow the ground-level "green line" markings along the 950-metre covered walkway, about 10–15 minutes.
  • By shuttle — the free inter-terminal shuttle runs about every 15 minutes and takes around 10 minutes, stopping at the international terminal's transport hub and outside the domestic terminal.

Our diagram draws the two buildings separately and marks the walkway precisely to show that the time to change buildings here depends on whether you choose to walk or wait for the shuttle.

Transfers and connections

  1. International to domestic (or the reverse) is the standard connection here, and you should allow more than 2 hours — New Zealand's biosecurity checks are extremely strict.
  2. When entering New Zealand, food and plant or animal products must be declared; fines for failing to do so are heavy, so allow time for a bag inspection.
  3. Domestic and international sit on the same airport site, so there is no extra cost in transferring across town — you just have to count the walk or the wait between buildings.

Routes and flights

RoutesAround 28 airlines serve 42 international and 23 domestic destinations; long-haul points include Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver
FlightsMore than 158,000 aircraft movements a year, around 50,000 passengers a day
AircraftAir New Zealand is the home-based carrier, with a fleet of around 115 aircraft; main types are the Boeing 787-9, Airbus A320/A321neo and ATR 72 turboprop

Getting into Auckland

  • Airport bus + suburban rail — take the orange airport bus to Puhinui station and change onto the suburban rail into the city; fares are low and this is the main public-transport option.
  • Taxi / ride-hailing — about 21 km; 30 minutes outside peak traffic, and possibly over an hour at peak times.
  • Car hire — well suited to a New Zealand road trip, with a large rental desk area.
  • Note — the long-running SkyBus airport express has been discontinued, so the information in older guides is out of date.

Practical tips

  • There is no airport rail link yet — the earlier light-rail plan has been cancelled, so a direct rail service to the airport will not happen in the near term; plan your journey into the city by road.
  • The airport is in the middle of a large-scale redevelopment running into the early 2030s, and the walkway and shuttle routes may change because of construction, so follow the signs on the ground.
  • New Zealand inspects incoming goods strictly, so build the biosecurity check into your connection buffer.
