Istanbul Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Istanbul Airport lies about 35 km from the city centre and handles around 84 million passengers a year (2025), making it one of the world's busiest airports by flight numbers. What is most unusual about it is this: the whole airport is one building — a terminal of roughly 1.4 million square metres forming a single continuous whole, domestic and international under the same roof, with five piers reaching out from the central hall.

One terminal, five piers

CodeNameMain use
A / B / D / FPiers (international)Mostly international flights; the F area also holds three domestic gate zones
GPier (domestic)Domestic flights only, with its own security and immigration

How to work out where you are: the letter of your gate is the letter of your pier. International flights look to A / B / D / F, and domestic flights are almost all in the G area.

  • There is no people-mover inside — the piers are linked entirely by walking and travelators, and the furthest gates are 20–30 minutes away.
  • A connection never changes building — whether domestic to international or international to international, it is all completed under the same roof, and that is the core advantage of this airport as a hub.

Our diagram draws it as one enormous main building with five radiating piers precisely to make the point: here you will only walk far, never end up in the wrong building.

Transfers and connections

  • All connections are completed inside the building, but distance itself is the biggest variable — build the walk between piers into your connecting margin.
  • A domestic-to-international transfer requires passing through security and immigration once, so allow more than 2 hours; international-to-international is usually smoother.
  • Wayfinding inside the building is clear, and although the hub is vast the route is a single one — simply follow your gate letter.

Getting into the city

  • Metro line M11 — runs straight into the city's metro network and is the best way to avoid the traffic; operating hours are limited, so for a late-night arrival make other plans.
  • HAVAIST airport coaches — routes cover Taksim, Sultanahmet and other main districts, with frequent departures.
  • Taxi — about 35 km and roughly 45 minutes when the traffic is clear; Istanbul's peak-hour congestion is severe and the journey can take twice as long.

Practical tips

  • Istanbul has a second airport, Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), on the Asian side, where most low-cost carriers fly. Always check the three-letter code when booking: if you are staying on the Asian side, SAW may be the nearer option.
  • Passenger volumes are enormous and check-in and security queues are substantial, so arrive 3 hours ahead for an international flight.
  • The building's shops and rest areas are on a huge scale, and a long connection does not require clearing immigration — when time is tight, rest where you are.
