Sydney Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Sydney Airport is about 8 km from the city centre and handles around 43 million passengers a year, which makes it one of the closest airports to the centre of any major national capital. Its layout is one large terminal and two small ones: T1 takes all international flights on its own, while T2 and T3 sit side by side handling domestic flights — the two precincts face each other across a runway and cannot be reached on foot.

The three terminals

CodeNameMain usersRole
T1International TerminalInternational carriersAll international flights
T2Terminal 2Virgin Australia, Jetstar and othersDomestic flights
T3Terminal 3QantasQantas domestic only

Working out where you are going: international is always T1; for domestic, go by the airline — Qantas is in T3, most others in T2. T2 and T3 are adjacent, a minute's walk apart.

Our diagram draws T1 and T2/T3 as two blocks divided by a runway, precisely to remind you that the international-to-domestic transfer is not "next door" but "a tunnel under the road plus a train or a shuttle".

Transfers and connections

  • International to domestic means clearing immigration, collecting your bags and checking in and clearing security again; the two precincts are linked by a free shuttle bus or the train, so allow 3 hours for the connection.
  • Qantas to Qantas (T3, or the Qantas area of T1) is the smoothest connection; for a transfer within one precinct, plan on 90 minutes.

Routes and flights

AspectDetail
RoutesA record around 43 million passengers in 2025, of which a record 17.2 million were international; around 90 destinations domestic and international, with long-haul points such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Singapore, Tokyo and Dubai.
FlightsA record year, with movements at roughly 800 a day (about 290,000 a year); international traffic grew 6.6% year on year in 2025.
AircraftThe main base is Qantas (oneworld; about 125 aircraft — A330, 787 and a handful of A380 widebodies, plus 737 narrowbodies), followed by Virgin Australia (T2) and Jetstar (Qantas Group; A320 and 787, T2).

Getting to Sydney

  • Train — there is a station at the international terminal and one at the domestic precinct; about 13 minutes direct to Central, with frequent services, and the first choice into the city.
  • Taxi — only about 8 km, around 20 minutes, and better value than the train if there are several of you.
  • Airport buses — cover the city and its surroundings.

Practical tips

  • Train fares include an airport access fee; in central Sydney you can tap in and out with a contactless credit card, so there is no need to buy a card.
  • After clearing arrivals at T1, confirm whether your next flight is from T2 or T3 — they are adjacent, but the gate levels do not connect, so you go down and back in.
  • The run into the city can stretch to 40 minutes in the evening peak, so build the traffic into your plans if you are catching a show or a long-distance coach.
