Milan Malpensa Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Malpensa lies about 50 km from central Milan and handles around 31.4 million passengers a year (2025), making it the city's main international airport. Its two terminals divide unusually cleanly: easyJet has T2 to itself, and every other carrier is in T1 — and with the two buildings about 3 km apart, any cross-terminal connection has to leave the building and go landside.

The two terminals

CodeNameMain carriersNotes
T1Terminal 1Every carrier except easyJetThe main building, with three concourses A / B / C
T2Terminal 2easyJet onlyA separate building, about 3 km from T1

How to tell where you are:

  • If you see easyJet, you always go to T2; every other carrier (including ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates and others) is in T1.
  • There is no airside link between the two buildings — whether you are connecting or simply went to the wrong one, you leave the building and take the free shuttle (about 15–20 minutes) or the train (a few minutes, ticket required).

Our diagram draws T2 as a block separate from the main building precisely to make the point that crossing between them means going by road — walking through inside is not an option.

Transfers and connections

  1. An easyJet-to-another-airline connection is a cross-terminal one — leave the building, collect your bags, take the shuttle and clear security again; allow more than 3 hours.
  2. A connection within T1 follows the normal process, and 2 hours is a safe buffer.
  3. Milan also has Linate Airport (LIN), used mainly for domestic and short European flights and much closer to the city; always check the three-letter code when booking.

Routes and flights

  • Routes — in 2025 the airport served 77 countries and about 204 direct destinations, the fastest-growing airport in its size category in Europe; long-haul points include New York, Miami, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Delhi, Dubai, Accra and São Paulo.
  • Flights — 31.4 million passengers in 2025 (+8.6%, an all-time record); Malpensa plus Linate together handled about 42.3 million passengers for the Milan system.
  • Aircraft — main base is easyJet (T2 exclusively), with every other carrier (including ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates and Qatar) in T1; the fleet is the A320 family, with 777 and A350 on long-haul.

Getting into Milan

  • Malpensa Express — about 57 minutes direct to Milano Centrale and 43 minutes to Cadorna, every 30 minutes, with a station at both terminals.
  • Airport buses — direct to Milano Centrale, cheaper than the Express, but exposed to traffic.
  • Taxi — about 50 km and expensive; rail is the better first choice.
  • Car hire — counters in both buildings, useful for the lakes and the Alps.

Practical tips

  • Milan has three airports (MXP Malpensa, LIN Linate, BGY Bergamo), and the low-cost carriers mostly use Bergamo, which is further from the city — always confirm before booking.
  • The Malpensa Express station is at T1, so if you are departing from or arriving at T2 you can ride the same line one stop each way (for a low fare), which is more punctual than the shuttle.
  • easyJet has kept growing its Malpensa base, and with that volume of flights security queues at T2 are noticeably long at peak times — arrive early.
