Lisbon Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Lisbon Airport lies only about 7 km from the city centre and handles around 36.1 million passengers a year (2025). It is one of Europe's rare "city airports", and structurally it has one easy trap: Terminal 2 handles departures only, not arrivals — if you fly out of T2 on a low-cost carrier but take the metro to T1, you still have a shuttle ride round to the other side ahead of you.

The two terminals

CodeNameNotes
T1Terminal 1The main building, and all arrivals are here; departures for TAP Portugal and most airlines also leave from T1
T2Terminal 2Departures only, used by low-cost carriers: Ryanair, Wizz, Vueling, Transavia and others

How to work out where you are:

  • Arrivals are always at T1 — whichever airline you fly, you land, clear immigration and collect your baggage at T1.
  • Departures depend on the airline — low-cost carriers are mostly at T2; T2 is about 1 km from T1, with no footpath and no metro, so the free shuttle bus is the only way across (roughly every 10–15 minutes, a few minutes' ride).

Our diagram draws T2 as a separate small building from the main one precisely to mark this "outbound only" shuttle link.

Transfers and connections

  1. Lisbon is dominated by point-to-point traffic, and a transfer across T1 and T2 means a shuttle and then security again; allow more than 2.5 hours.
  2. A transfer within T1 is straightforward, and connections within the TAP group save the most time.
  3. Departing from T2, arrive earlier than usual — shuttle buses are limited and the wait is unpredictable.

Routes and flights

  • Routes — around 30 airlines flying to about 140 destinations, and southern Europe's most dense gateway to Brazil, Africa and North America; long-haul points include New York, Boston, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Casablanca.
  • Flights — about 36.1 million passengers in 2025, a record high (+3.4% year on year), and the busiest single-runway airport in Europe.
  • Aircraft — main base is TAP Air Portugal (T1), followed by Ryanair, Vueling and Wizz (T2 departures); TAP's workhorse fleets are the A320neo and A330neo families.

Getting into Lisbon

  • Red metro line — the station is inside the T1 arrivals hall, about 20 minutes into the city at a very low fare; passengers departing from T2 must go to T1 first and then take the shuttle.
  • Airport buses — cover the main districts of the city centre and the railway station, with plenty of luggage space.
  • Taxi / rideshare — only about 7 km, and 15 minutes or so when the traffic is clear.
  • Suburban rail — reachable with a change in some directions, and useful for Sintra and other nearby towns.

Practical tips

  • One sentence is enough to remember: arrivals at T1, low-cost departures at T2. If you take the metro to T1 and need to move to T2, allow a 30-minute buffer.
  • Lisbon Airport is planning relocation and expansion, so the long-term facilities may change; check official information before you travel.
  • The city centre rises and falls sharply and the old streets are narrow, so with a lot of luggage a taxi is often less effort than the metro.
