Athens International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Athens International lies about 27 km from the city centre and handles around 34 million passengers a year (2025), making it Greece's only international hub. Everything centres on one main building, divided into two halls — one for non-Schengen flights, the other for domestic and Schengen flights — and at the summer travel peak some gates move out to a satellite terminal.

The main building and the satellite

AreaNotes
Main building · non-Schengen hallIntercontinental and Middle East flights; gates mostly carry an A prefix
Main building · domestic/Schengen hallGreek domestic and European Schengen flights
Satellite terminalUsed in peak season, mainly for gates A30–A45 and above

How to work out where you are going:

  • Start with the destination: flying to a Schengen country or within Greece, you use the domestic/Schengen hall; flying outside Schengen, the non-Schengen hall.
  • If your gate is in the satellite terminal (mostly A30 and above), you reach it through an underground walkway with travelators, so allow an extra 10–15 minutes.

Our diagram draws the satellite as a small block beyond the main building precisely to mark that underground link.

Transfers and connections

  1. Connections are made inside the one main building, but moving between the Schengen and non-Schengen areas means passport control, so allow more than 1.5 hours.
  2. For a connection involving a satellite gate, count the walk through the underground passage.
  3. Summer (June–September) is the peak for Greek island travel, when the airport's traffic surges and the queues at security and passport control are noticeably longer; arriving 3 hours ahead is advisable.

Routes and flights

AspectPoints
RoutesIn 2025, 70 airlines served 164 cities in 55 countries; traffic is mainly intra-European, with long-haul points in the Middle East and the Gulf, and new direct services to Delhi and Mumbai from 2026
FlightsAround 760 scheduled arrivals and departures a day in 2025 (Eurocontrol figure)
AircraftAegean Airlines is the home-based carrier, with a fleet of around 88 aircraft, mainly Airbus A320/A321neo, plus ATR 72 turboprops

Getting into Athens

  • Metro Line 3 (blue line) — the station is right beside the terminal, about 40 minutes direct to Syntagma Square and onward to Piraeus port; the first choice for the city.
  • Airport express bus X95 — runs 24 hours direct to Syntagma Square, and the main option for late-night arrivals.
  • Suburban railway — serves Piraeus port and Athens Central station, useful for travellers who need to change onto a ferry.
  • Taxi — about 27 km, with a fixed fare into the city (different by day and night).

Practical tips

  • Greek island itineraries usually start from Piraeus port, and Metro Line 3 runs straight there, so an airport-to-ferry transfer need not cross the city.
  • Metro and bus tickets are not interchangeable, so buy each separately and validate at the gate before you travel.
  • Summer afternoons often bring strong winds and high temperatures; if you have a long connection, use the rest areas inside the building rather than clearing immigration early.
