Hong Kong International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Hong Kong International Airport sits on reclaimed land at Chek Lap Kok. It handles around 61 million passengers a year (2025) and lies about 34 km from the city centre. What sets it apart is that one main terminal carries almost all the traffic, with two further facilities handling remote gates — understanding that split is what tells you how far you will actually have to walk.

The three passenger facilities

CodeNameGatesRole
T1Terminal 11–80Check-in, security, departures and arrivals; every international flight starts here
MMidfield Concourse201–230Remote gates reached by shuttle from the main building
SNorth Satellite Concourse501–510Circular satellite used by regional flights

Your gate number tells you where you are going:

  • 1–80 — inside Terminal 1 itself.
  • 201–230 — the Midfield Concourse, a further hop from the main building.
  • 501–510 — the North Satellite Concourse. The highest gate numbers here usually mean the earliest start.

Our diagram draws the North Satellite Concourse as a circle precisely to distinguish it from the rectangular main and midfield buildings.

Transfers and connections

Connections are handled inside Terminal 1, but if your arrival and departure gates sit in different facilities, allow extra time. In practice:

  1. Work out which range your onward gate falls into (1–80 / 201–230 / 501–510).
  2. A connection inside the main terminal is the quickest; a move to the midfield or satellite facility adds shuttle and walking time in both directions.
  3. The higher the gate number, the earlier you should clear the transit checkpoint.

Routes and flights

AspectDetails
Routes61 million passengers in 2025 (+15%), a strong recovery year; the global hub for Cathay Pacific, with services to every major city worldwide
Flights394,730 aircraft movements in 2025 (+8.7%), roughly 1,080 a day
AircraftCathay Pacific is the base carrier, flying Airbus A330 / A350 and Boeing 777 widebodies; its low-cost subsidiary HK Express also operates from here

Getting into the city

  • Airport Express — 24 minutes direct to Central / Hong Kong Station, and the fastest option.
  • Airport buses — the A and E routes cover every district of Hong Kong. Cheaper than the Airport Express but exposed to traffic.
  • Taxi — separate ranks for the city and for Lantau; check which queue you are in before boarding.
  • Cross-border ferry — links to Pearl River Delta ports, useful if you are heading straight on to the mainland.

Practical tips

  • At 34 km out, this is one of the further major Asian hubs from its city centre — build the ground transfer into your plans.
  • The Airport Express offers in-town check-in, so you can drop bags at Hong Kong or Kowloon station and travel to the airport unencumbered.
  • For a same-day Pearl River Delta trip, compare the cross-border ferry against the Airport Express plus a land crossing before deciding.
