Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Delhi's airport lies about 16 km from the centre of New Delhi and handles around 78 million passengers a year (2025), making it the largest aviation hub in South Asia. Its division of labour is unlike most hubs: of the three terminals only T3 takes international flights, while T1 and T2 are domestic-only — which means an international to domestic connection almost always involves a change of building.
The three terminals
| Code | Name | Flight types | Main users |
|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | Terminal 1 | Domestic only | Mostly low-cost carriers; capacity much increased after expansion |
| T2 | Terminal 2 | Domestic only | Some domestic trunk routes |
| T3 | Terminal 3 | International + domestic | The only international terminal; Air India and others |
How to work out where you are going: only T3 has international flights — international arrivals are always at T3; domestic flights are divided between T1, T2 and T3 by airline, and T3 has a domestic concourse of its own.
- T3's international concourses are A, B and C, and its domestic concourse is D — an international to domestic connection inside the same building needs no exit, and is the smoothest kind of transfer in Delhi.
- T1, T2 and T3 are some distance apart, and can only be linked landside by shuttle bus or rail.
Our diagram lays the three buildings out separately precisely to make the point: in Delhi, it is the domestic leg's terminal that needs checking in advance, more than the international leg's.
Transfers and connections
- Start with the terminal of your domestic flight: if it is in the same building as T3 that is quickest; if it is at T1 or T2, allow transfer time.
- An airside transfer bus now runs between the buildings (T1↔T3), so you do not have to clear immigration and go back in; transfer efficiency has improved noticeably in recent years.
- International to international is almost always completed inside T3, where two hours is a comfortable buffer.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Routes | The densest domestic network in India, serving well over a hundred domestic cities and the main long-haul international points (London, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok and others); 78.15 million passengers in 2025, ranked 11th worldwide |
| Flights | Around 481,856 aircraft movements in 2025 (ACI), roughly 1,300 a day |
| Aircraft | IndiGo and Air India are the main bases; IndiGo flies A320-family aircraft on domestic trunks, while Air India uses widebodies (B777 / B787 / A350) on long-haul international |
Getting into Delhi
- Airport Express (Orange line) — about 20 minutes direct to New Delhi station, with clean carriages and frequent services; the option we recommend most.
- Other metro lines — some run direct to T1; convenient for changes, but slower.
- Taxi / ride-hailing — prepaid counters and designated ride-hailing pickup areas, with transparent pricing; about 16 km.
- Airport buses — routes covering the city, and the lowest fare.
Practical tips
- Delhi's air pollution is especially severe in winter and flight delays are common, so do not cut your connection too fine.
- Every terminal has prepaid taxi counters — do not follow touts to a car at the arrivals exit.
- For international flights, arrive three hours ahead: Delhi's airport has a number of security and document checks.
