Shanghai Pudong International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Shanghai Pudong International Airport lies to the east of the city, handles around 85 million passengers a year (2025) and is about 30 km from People's Square. Its structure is two main buildings plus two satellite halls: check-in and security are always completed in a main building, yet your gate may fall in a satellite hall — whether that gate is in S1 or S2 directly decides how far you still have to walk after security.

Two main buildings and two satellite halls

CodeNameMain usersRole
T1Terminal 1Mainly China EasternCheck-in and boarding for domestic and international flights
T2Terminal 2Air China, China Southern and othersCheck-in and boarding for domestic and international flights
S1Satellite 1—A boarding-only concourse on the T1 side, linked by transit train
S2Satellite 2—A boarding-only concourse on the T2 side, linked by transit train

How to tell where you are going:

  • Check-in, bag drop, security and immigration are all completed in the T1 or T2 main building; the satellite halls handle no check-in at all.
  • If your gate is marked S1 or S2, you need the free transit train after security — allow 15–30 minutes.
  • If a connecting passenger's gates are split between a main building and a satellite hall, the transit train time has to be counted twice.

Our diagram draws S1 and S2 as long, separate shapes set apart from the main buildings precisely to remind you that they are reached by transit train, not on foot.

Transfers and connections

Pudong is one of the busiest international transfer points in China, and connections fall into three tiers — same building, across buildings, across satellite halls:

  1. A connection within T1 or within T2 is the quickest.
  2. When the gates fall on T1 (or S1) and T2 (or S2) respectively, the transit train and walking time cannot be compressed — be generous with your buffer.
  3. Transfer formalities are handled at the transfer desks in the main terminal buildings; the satellite halls do not process transfers.

Routes and flights

AspectDetail
RoutesNamed the most connected airport in the Asia-Pacific for 2025; 16.2% of passengers transfer (13.75 million connecting passengers). Long-haul points cover North America, Europe, Oceania and the Middle East, making it China's busiest international gateway.
FlightsAround 557,000 aircraft movements in 2025 (+5.5% year on year), roughly 1,500 movements a day.
AircraftThe main base is China Eastern Airlines (fleet around 826 aircraft; Airbus A320 family and Boeing 737 family as workhorses, widebodies on A330 / A350 / Boeing 777 / 787, and the world's largest C919 fleet). Air China, China Southern and Hainan also run major bases here.

Getting into the city

  • Metro Line 2 — direct into the city and running through to People's Square and Hongqiao Railway Station, and the cheapest option.
  • Maglev — 8 minutes to Longyang Road, then a change to the metro; fast and a novelty in itself, with a further discount on production of a same-day air ticket.
  • Airport buses — cover the main directions into the city; useful if you have a lot of luggage or arrive at night.
  • Taxi — about 30 km and roughly 50 minutes without traffic, markedly longer at peak times.

Practical tips

  • Shanghai has two airports: Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA) — Hongqiao is much closer to the city centre, so always confirm your departure airport before booking.
  • If your gate is in a satellite hall, do not linger deep inside the main building — once through security, first confirm the direction of the transit train platform.
  • The maglev does not run through the night; for a late arrival, take a taxi or one of the airport's night bus routes.
