The Global Travel Awards 2026 World's Best Airport trophy

In April 2026, Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) was named World's Best Airport at the Global Travel Awards 2026. The award is decided by millions of travellers around the world and weighs two things: whether the airport's aviation infrastructure holds up, and whether the passenger experience does. The first is about moving aircraft, bags and people through the building; the second is about how effortless the journey from arrival to boarding feels.

For an international hub handling tens of millions of passengers a year, "world's best" is rarely an isolated trophy. In the same period, Hong Kong International Airport was named Best Airport in China at the TTG China Travel Awards for the third consecutive year, and took World's Best Airport Security Processing and World's Best Airport Washrooms at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2026. Four trophies point to one conclusion: travellers' verdict on this airport is broadening from "easy to transfer through" to "everything works".

1. Four trophies, three kinds of judging

The four awards come from three different judging systems, and each measures something slightly different. The Global Travel Awards puts the vote in travellers' hands and stresses the combination of infrastructure and experience. The TTG China Travel Awards draws on the travel trade and its readers, and pays more attention to an airport's route network and reputation in the China market. Skytrax bases its results on passenger-satisfaction surveys across more than 500 airports in over 100 countries, and its category awards tend to read like a health check on day-to-day operations.

2. Security and washrooms: the details travellers remember

Two of the four awards deserve a closer look. Security processing covers the most tense stretch of a passenger's time in the terminal: how long the queue is, whether laptops and liquids have to come out again, and whether a bag search runs smoothly. Washrooms are the other high-frequency touchpoint, where cleaning schedules, queues and accessible design often shape an opinion more than a dramatic roof ever will.

Winning both at once suggests the airport has put real resources into operations that passengers rarely photograph. For travellers the practical meaning is simple: on a morning or evening connection through Hong Kong, security and washrooms are unlikely to be the weak link in the journey.

3. Behind the awards: a long build-up

Hong Kong International Airport opened at Chek Lap Kok in 1998 and has long ranked among the world's busiest international cargo airports; it is also a key transfer point between mainland China, Southeast Asia and long-haul routes to Europe and North America. In recent years the airport completed its three-runway system and kept renewing facilities inside the terminals — investment that never appears on a trophy but underpins the experience being judged.

The third straight TTG Best Airport in China award also says something about how mainland travellers still see the airport. For passengers connecting through Hong Kong to a third country, its value lies less in duty-free shops and lounges than in dense flight waves, clear transfer signage and relatively stable punctuality.

4. What it means for travellers

If you are planning a trip through Hong Kong, treat the awards as a useful signal rather than a guarantee. What decides your journey is still the flight schedule, the connection time and your documents: leave enough time between flights, check in advance whether you need to enter Hong Kong, and allow an extra 20–30 minutes at security during peak periods. That will do more for your trip than any trophy.
