LaGuardia Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

LaGuardia Airport sits alongside Queens in New York, about 13 km from Manhattan, and handles around 32.8 million passengers a year (2025). It has just completed a transformation: Terminal B and Terminal C have been rebuilt and reopened, with a look completely unlike a few years ago. But it is also the only one of New York's three main airports without a direct rail link — the city is reached by road, and that is its greatest shortcoming.

The four terminals

CodeNameMain carriers
ATerminal ASmall airlines and general aviation
BTerminal BDelta, Southwest, American and others (new build, opening in stages from 2022)
CTerminal CDelta's principal base (new build)
DTerminal DUnited, Air Canada and others (being refurbished)

How to work out where you are:

  • Check the operating airline: Delta at C (some at B), Southwest and American mostly at B, United at D.
  • Free shuttle buses run between the terminals, but some can also be reached on foot; follow the signs on the ground.

Our diagram draws the four buildings side by side on the bay shore precisely to make the point: here the buildings are joined at ground level, with no rail between them.

Transfers and connections

  1. LaGuardia is dominated by origin-and-destination traffic, and its connecting facilities fall short of JFK's, so a transfer between separately booked tickets needs generous time.
  2. An inter-terminal transfer relies on the shuttle bus; allow more than 2 hours.
  3. If your itinerary needs a long-haul connection, book through JFK rather than LaGuardia.

Routes and flights

  • Routes — dominated by US domestic and short-haul Canadian points, with around 15 airlines and about 50 non-stop destinations; there are no intercontinental flights here (time-of-day and airport agreement restrictions), so transatlantic travel goes through JFK or EWR.
  • Flights — about 32.79 million passengers in 2025, the second-busiest year in the airport's history, with about 350,000 aircraft movements.
  • Aircraft — main base is Delta (Terminal C mainly), followed by Southwest, American and United; the fleet is Boeing 717, 737 and Airbus A320 family narrowbodies.

Getting into New York

  • Bus plus subway — the Q70 and other bus routes connect to the subway and commuter rail; the lowest fare, and the most common substitute for rail.
  • Taxi / rideshare — about 13 km, but congestion on the East River bridges and tunnels is severe, and the journey can take far longer than the distance suggests.
  • Airport buses — link the main Manhattan hubs and hotel districts.
  • Driving — via the Grand Central Parkway and the river crossings; not advisable at peak times.

Practical tips

  • The division of labour among New York's three airports: JFK for long-haul international, Newark (EWR) for international and as United's hub, LaGuardia (LGA) for short-haul domestic — when a transfer involves two of them, set aside half a day on its own.
  • From LaGuardia, always estimate by road time, counting the queues for the bridges and tunnels, rather than pricing the trip on 13 km of distance.
  • The new terminals' shops and rest areas are a great deal better, and worth leaving time to browse when you have a wait.
