Kansai International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Kansai International Airport is built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 38 km from central Osaka, and handles around 34 million passengers a year (2025). Its structure is not complicated, but the two buildings serve entirely different traffic: the T1 main building across the sea bridge carries every traditional airline, while T2 on the far side of that bridge is the low-cost terminal — the terminal number on your boarding pass decides directly whether you have an extra shuttle bus ride ahead of you.

The two terminals

CodeNameMain carriersRole
T1Terminal 1JAL, ANA and the international airlinesDomestic and international flights
T2Terminal 2Peach and other low-cost carriersLCC only

How to work out where you are: full-service airlines are all at T1; see Peach and other low-cost carriers and they are almost always at T2. T2 has no direct link to the bridge, so from the railway station side you reach it by free shuttle bus.

Our diagram draws T1 as the signature extra-long slab and T2 as a separate small building precisely to mark the shuttle link between the two.

Transfers and connections

  • A T1-to-T2 transfer needs the shuttle bus; allow more than 90 minutes for the connection. A transfer within one building saves the most time.
  • International-to-domestic and domestic-to-international transfers are both completed inside the T1 main building, with the process concentrated under one roof.

AircraftPeach Aviation is one of the main bases, with the low-cost T2 terminal dedicated to it; JAL, ANA and ANA Wings also fly A320-family aircraft from T1

Getting into Osaka

  • Nankai Rapi:t — a limited express reaching Namba in about 38 minutes, with carriages and a timetable both designed around travellers.
  • JR Haruka limited express — about 30 minutes to Tennoji and about 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka, with some services running through to Kyoto in about 80 minutes; useful if you are continuing elsewhere in western Japan.
  • Airport buses — cover the main districts of Osaka and Kobe.
  • Taxi — a considerable distance once across the bridge, so it only pays when shared.

Practical tips

  • Osaka also has Itami Airport (ITM), which handles domestic routes only. When a search turns up "Osaka", always check the three-letter code: international and low-cost flights are mostly at Kansai (KIX), while ANA and other domestic flights are mostly at Itami.
  • T2's facilities are pared back, with fewer places to eat and fewer check-in counters than T1, so arrive earlier still for a low-cost flight.
  • On an artificial-island airport, strong winds can bring speed limits on the bridge, so if you are pressed for time choose the railway rather than the bus.
