Suvarnabhumi Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Suvarnabhumi lies about 30 km east of central Bangkok and handles around 62.7 million passengers a year (fiscal 2025). It has one main building and no second terminal — but seven concourses (A–G) fan out behind it, along with the SAT-1 satellite. Here, ending up in the wrong concourse is far more common than ending up at the wrong terminal.
One main building, seven concourses, one satellite
| Area | Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main building | Check-in hall | All check-in, security and passport control is handled on the departures level |
| A–G | Concourses | Gates numbered letter + number, used by domestic and international flights alike |
| SAT-1 | Satellite terminal | Linked to the main building by underground people mover |
How to work out where you are going:
- The letter of your gate is the concourse — check the letter before heading into a concourse, and do not try to find your gate by walking across the main building.
- Concourses are not divided into domestic and international, and both kinds of flight can appear in the same one; go by the full gate shown on your boarding pass.
- If your gate is in SAT-1, you reach it after security and passport control on an underground driverless people mover; allow an extra 15–20 minutes.
Our diagram draws SAT-1 as a long bar parallel to and separate from the main building precisely to mark that people-mover link.
Transfers and connections
Every connection at Suvarnabhumi happens inside a "single building", which is simple in process but not necessarily in distance:
- First check whether the concourse letters of the two gates match.
- The same concourse is quickest; crossing concourses means returning to the main building's central hall and entering another one, which is a considerable distance.
- For a connection involving a SAT-1 gate, count the wait for the people mover in; allow more than 90 minutes.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Points |
|---|---|
| Routes | Suvarnabhumi is mainly an international transit hub, with points across East and South-East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Oceania; long-haul points include London, Paris, Frankfurt, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou |
| Flights | 370,823 aircraft movements in fiscal 2025 |
| Aircraft | Thai Airways is the home-based carrier, with a fleet of 80 aircraft at the end of 2025 (59 wide-body, 21 narrow-body); main types are the Boeing 787, Airbus A350/A330 and Boeing 777 |
Getting into Bangkok
- Airport Rail Link (ARL) — about 26 minutes to Phaya Thai, where you can change onto the BTS Skytrain; the most predictable option.
- Taxi — a queued rank with metered fares, plus expressway tolls on top; about 40 minutes without traffic, and possibly over an hour in the evening peak.
- Grab ride-hailing — clearly priced, with pick-up points separate from the taxi rank, and easier late at night.
- Airport buses — connect to the main districts of the city; services are limited, so best for light packers.
Practical tips
- Bangkok has two airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), and low-cost carriers mostly use Don Mueang; always check the three-letter code when booking a connection, and if you hold a through ticket, ask the airline about the free transfer bus between the two.
- The main building is very deep, with check-in islands arranged in zones; at the departures entrance, check the screens for your island before queuing.
- In the evening peak (16:00–20:00) the trip into the city can take twice as long; when you have a train or an onward schedule to catch, the ARL is the first choice.
