London Gatwick Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Gatwick Airport lies about 45 km from central London and handles around 42.8 million passengers a year (2025), making it London's second airport. It has only two terminals: the North Terminal and the South Terminal, joined by a free automatic people-mover (about 2 minutes) — the only "change of building" in the whole airport.

The two terminals

How to work out where you are:

  • Long-haul and full-service airlines are mostly in the South Terminal; charter and holiday routes are mostly in the North Terminal.
  • The free shuttle (Inter-terminal Transit) between the two takes about 2 minutes and runs frequently; you can also walk, but it is not a short distance.
  • The railway station is on the South Terminal side — passengers starting from the North Terminal must take the shuttle to the South before entering the station.

Our diagram draws the two terminals as a symmetrical pair joined by a shuttle precisely to mark that inter-terminal link.

Transfers and connections

  1. First check whether both flights use the same terminal; a same-terminal connection saves the most time.
  2. An inter-terminal transfer goes landside and through security again, and with the shuttle time on top you should allow more than 2.5 hours.
  3. Gatwick is dominated by leisure and holiday traffic and has a lower share of connecting passengers than Heathrow, so when tickets are booked separately leave even more margin.

Routes and flights

  • Routes — around 60 airlines flying to more than 160 short-haul and 50-plus long-haul destinations; long-haul points include New York, Orlando, Barbados, Dubai and Shanghai.
  • Flights — 42.8 million passengers in 2025 (down 1.1%), with about 259,000 aircraft movements; short-haul 35.9 million and long-haul 6.9 million.
  • Aircraft — main base is easyJet (North Terminal; 18.9 million passengers in 2025), followed by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and TUI; short-haul fleets are the A319/A320/A321 family, with A330 and 787 on long-haul.

Getting into London

  • Gatwick Express — about 30 minutes direct to Victoria station, running frequently, and the fastest way into the city.
  • Ordinary commuter trains and Thameslink — cover London Bridge, St Pancras and other stations at a lower fare.
  • Airport buses — direct to Victoria and towards Heathrow, so they can bridge a transfer between the two airports.
  • Taxi / rideshare — about 45 km; expensive and much affected by traffic.

Practical tips

  • London's three airports are far apart: if you are transferring to Heathrow, the drive between the two can take more than 1.5 hours, so do not treat the two as a single itinerary.
  • The railway station is concentrated at the South Terminal, so from the North Terminal allow for the shuttle and the walk.
  • At holiday peaks (summer and Christmas) the North Terminal is extremely busy; low-cost and charter passengers should arrive earlier still.
