London Stansted Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Stansted lies about 55 km from central London and handles around 30 million passengers a year. It is the most single-minded of London's three main airports: it has just one terminal, and low-cost carriers dominate — Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2 and the like make up the great majority of flights. Structurally there is no terminal-change problem to solve; the only thing to work out is the distance into town.

A single terminal

Working out where you are going: every flight is in the same building, so you simply head for your gate number. Low-cost flights often park on remote stands, so factor the walking and the apron bus into your buffer (on some flights you board a bus at the gate).

Our diagram shows a single main building precisely to make the point that at Stansted there is no inter-terminal connection to worry about; the time cost lies in the direction of the city.

Transfers and connections

  1. Every connection happens inside the one building, but Stansted is overwhelmingly a point-to-point airport and through-ticketed connections are limited.
  2. If you are connecting here on two separate tickets, allow more than 3 hours for immigration, baggage reclaim and checking in again.
  3. Low-cost baggage rules and check-in deadlines are strict; do not estimate a connection here from full-service airline habits.

Routes and flights

AspectDetail
RoutesA record around 30 million passengers in 2025; around 200 destinations, almost all short- and medium-haul European leisure and city points — the busiest are Istanbul, Dublin, Edinburgh, Barcelona, Palma and Faro, and the busiest countries Spain, Italy and Germany.
FlightsRoughly 95,000 aircraft movements a year; December 2025 was the busiest month ever at 2.26 million passengers, and the busiest single day topped 106,000.
AircraftThe main base is Ryanair's largest base (around half of all passengers here; an all-Boeing 737 fleet of about 600 aircraft group-wide), followed by easyJet, Jet2.com and Pegasus.

Getting into London

  • Stansted Express — about 47 minutes direct to London Liverpool Street, with frequent departures, and the main way into town.
  • Coach — direct to Victoria, Liverpool Street and other stops; cheaper than the Express but exposed to traffic.
  • Taxi / ride-hailing — about 55 km; expensive and with unpredictable journey times, so generally not recommended.
  • Car hire — suited to destinations to the east, such as Cambridge.

Practical tips

  • London's three main airports divide the work clearly: Heathrow (LHR) for full-service and long-haul, Gatwick (LGW) for leisure and long-haul, Stansted (STN) for low-cost — always check the three-letter code when booking; they are a long way apart.
  • The Express stops running relatively early, so for a late-night arrival take an airport coach or book a transfer.
  • Low-cost gates can be a long walk away, so once you are through security head straight for your gate rather than lingering in the shops.
