Newark Liberty International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Newark lies about 20 km from Manhattan and handles around 47 million passengers a year (2025), the New York metropolitan area's second international gateway. It has three terminals: A is brand new, C is United's hub and B is the oldest, now being rebuilt — and the one development that matters most in 2026 is this: the AirTrain is being replaced wholesale, with sections closed on weekday daytime and covered by shuttle buses.
The three terminals
| Code | Name | Main carriers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Terminal A | Delta, American, JetBlue, Air Canada and others | New building opened from 2023, mostly domestic |
| B | Terminal B | Several international carriers and some United flights | The oldest building, being rebuilt in stages (until about 2028) |
| C | Terminal C | United (hub) | The largest, United domestic and some international |
How to tell where you are: for United, look first at Terminal C (some domestic flights use Terminal A); international carriers use B; A is mostly domestic. United flights can be spread across all three buildings, so always go by the terminal on your boarding pass.
Our diagram draws the three buildings as a cluster threaded onto a single rail line precisely to mark the AirTrain, the spine that links them.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Routes | 83 airlines serving 188 non-stop destinations; 47 million passengers in 2025, down slightly from 48.9 million in 2024 as runway resurfacing and FAA slot limits reduced schedules |
| Flights | Roughly 490 departures a day |
| Aircraft | United Airlines is the base carrier, with its hub at Terminal C; the fleet flies Boeing 757 / 767 / 777 / 787 |
Getting to Manhattan
- AirTrain + Northeast Corridor trains — the AirTrain links the terminals to the airport rail station, where NJ Transit commuter trains or Amtrak run direct to New York Penn Station; the most reliable way in.
- AirTrain + PATH — change to the PATH line into the city, for a lower fare.
- Airport bus — direct to the main parts of Manhattan, suited to travellers with a lot of luggage.
- Taxi / ride-hailing — about 20 km and through a tunnel into the city, which can run past 1.5 hours at peak times.
Practical tips
- What the 2026 AirTrain rebuild means: on weekdays from 05:00 to 15:00 some sections are closed and replaced by shuttle buses, so allow at least 15 minutes extra; weekends run normally. Work pauses during the holiday peak season.
- Newark and JFK lie a long way apart, so for a cross-airport connection allow half a day and do not judge it as "the same city".
- Taxis and ride-hailing pick up in zones by destination — follow the airport signs to the right area to wait.
