Barcelona-El Prat Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Barcelona's airport lies about 15 km from the city centre and handles around 57.5 million passengers a year (2025), making it Spain's second-largest airport. Its two terminals sit about 4 km apart: T1 is the main building and takes most airlines, while T2 is made up of three modules, T2A, T2B and T2C, and is where most low-cost carriers go — pick the wrong building and you face a long loop round by shuttle.

The two terminals

CodeNameMain carriersNotes
T1Terminal 1Iberia, major international airlinesThe main building, with the fullest facilities
T2Terminal 2Ryanair, easyJet and other low-cost carriersSplit into three modules, A / B / C

How to work out where you are going:

  • Low-cost carriers mostly use T2 and full-service airlines mostly T1 — check the airline first, then the terminal number on your boarding pass.
  • Between the two buildings the free shuttle is the only option (roughly every 10–15 minutes); there is no walkway.

Our diagram draws T1 and T2 as two blocks facing each other across the runway precisely to mark that shuttle link.

Transfers and connections

  1. The two terminals are not connected airside — a cross-terminal connection means leaving the building, taking the shuttle and going through security again; allow more than 3 hours.
  2. A connection inside T1 runs smoothly; 2 hours is a comfortable allowance.
  3. Barcelona is a major gateway to Catalonia and to Mediterranean cruises, so cruise passengers should set aside time for the port leg separately.

Routes and flights

AspectPoints
Routes57.48 million passengers in 2025, of whom 43.3 million were international; Barcelona–Palma (BCN–PMI) is Europe's busiest airport pair
FlightsAround 361,000 aircraft movements in 2025
AircraftVueling is the largest base carrier (about 38% market share), with a group fleet of around 140 all-Airbus A320-family aircraft; about 60 are based at the Barcelona hub on more than 120 routes; Iberia, Ryanair and easyJet also operate heavily

Getting into Barcelona

  • Metro L9 Sud — has stations at both T1 and T2 and connects to the city's metro network; the cheapest option.
  • Suburban railway line R2 — the station is at T2, running direct to Plaça de Catalunya and Barcelona Sants; from T1 you must take the shuttle first.
  • Aerobús airport bus — departs from T1 and T2 separately, direct to Plaça de Catalunya, with frequent services.
  • Taxi — about 15 km, with a minimum fare for trips towards the city centre.

Practical tips

  • Remember the iron rule: rail and bus stops are separate by terminal — if you are departing from T2, use the T2 side, because crossing between terminals costs time and easily loses you your service.
  • Barcelona has two further regional airports, Girona (GRO) and Reus (REU), where some low-cost flights operate; always check the three-letter code when booking.
  • In cruise season (April–October) the airport's traffic concentrates, so cruise passengers should set aside half a day for the transfer from airport to port.
