Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Sheremetyevo sits north-west of Moscow, about 30 km from the city centre, handles around 43 million passengers a year and is one of Russia's largest airports. Its terminals are spread across two areas, north and south, roughly 2 km apart, joined by a free underground train — and with terminals opening and closing frequently in recent years, working from an old guide is a good way to end up at a closed building.
The two terminal areas
| Code | Name | Current use |
|---|---|---|
| B | Terminal B (north) | Main domestic terminal, Aeroflot group hub |
| C | Terminal C (north) | Mostly international, airside-linked to B |
| D | Terminal D (south) | Low-cost carriers (Pobeda, Smartavia and others) |
| E / F | Terminals E and F (south) | Currently closed or maintenance only; no longer in regular service |
| A | Terminal A | Business and private aviation only; no scheduled flights |
Working out where you are going:
- The north area (B + C) carries the traffic now — B for domestic, C for international, with the two linked airside.
- In the south, D takes the low-cost traffic; E and F are no longer in regular service.
- There is no walking route between the north and south areas; the free underground train links them (every few minutes, about 4 minutes end to end).
Our diagram draws the north and south areas as two groups of buildings joined by an underground track, precisely to mark out this cross-airport link.
Transfers and connections
- First check whether both flights are in the same area — both in B/C is the quickest by far.
- A connection across the north and south areas adds the underground train, so allow more than 2.5 hours.
- International to domestic transfers normally happen within the north area (between B and C), so the process is fairly contained.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Routes | The busiest airport in Russia, with around 200 destinations; since the reshaping of international routes, domestic, CIS, Middle Eastern and Asian points (Dubai, Istanbul, Beijing, Delhi) now make up the larger share, while direct services to Western Europe have contracted sharply. |
| Flights | A record around 43 million passengers in 2025, on roughly 250,000 movements (about 700 a day); the Aeroflot Group itself accounts for about 36 million passengers here, around 84% of the total. |
| Aircraft | The main base is Aeroflot (about 170 mainline aircraft: A320 family narrowbodies with A330 / A350 / 777 widebodies on long-haul), followed by Pobeda (an all-Boeing 737 low-cost fleet, Terminal D) and Nordwind. |
Getting into Moscow
- Airport express — about 35 minutes direct to Belorussky Station in the city centre, every 30 minutes, and the most predictable option; there are stations in both the north and south areas.
- Taxi / ride-hailing — about 30 km; the fare swings widely with traffic, so order through an app.
- Buses and commuter trains — low fares, but more changes and longer journey times.
- Note: Moscow has several airports around it, and an airport-to-airport transfer needs half a day set aside for crossing the city.
Practical tips
- Moscow has four main airports (Sheremetyevo SVO, Domodedovo DME, Vnukovo VKO and Zhukovsky ZIA), so always check the three-letter code before booking or arranging a pickup.
- Terminal opening arrangements have changed a lot in recent years, so check the airport's official information before you travel rather than relying on an old guide.
- The airport express stops overnight, so arrange a transfer in advance if you land on a red-eye flight.
