Washington Dulles International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Dulles lies about 40 km from central Washington and handles around 29 million passengers a year (2025), the Washington metropolitan area's main international gateway. Its layout has one historical quirk: the check-in main terminal and the boarding concourses are separate from each other — passengers were once moved by "mobile lounges", and today the underground AeroTrain does most of the linking.
The main terminal and the four concourses
| Area | Notes |
|---|---|
| Main terminal | Check-in, security, immigration and international arrivals |
| Concourse A | Connected to the main terminal, reachable on foot |
| Concourses B / C / D | Reached by the AeroTrain |
| Concourse D | Mostly international flights; United long-haul also uses it |
How to tell where you are:
- The gate letter is the concourse — Concourse A is walkable, B/C/D need the AeroTrain.
- Between the main terminal and the concourses the traditional mobile lounge still runs as a backup link, but day to day the AeroTrain is the main one.
- International flights are concentrated on the Concourse D side, while international arrivals are processed in the main terminal.
Our diagram draws the main terminal and Concourses B/C/D as separate buildings precisely to mark that underground AeroTrain link.
Transfers and connections
- United's Atlantic gateway — United connections are mostly made between Concourses C and D, linked by the AeroTrain.
- Waiting for and riding the AeroTrain takes about 10–15 minutes; build that into your margin.
- An international arrival onto a domestic flight means immigration, collecting baggage and checking in again through security; allow more than 2.5 hours.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Details |

| Flights | 29.01 million passengers in 2025, continuing to grow quickly |
| Aircraft | United Airlines' Atlantic gateway, which it calls the "Decade of Dulles"; it flies transatlantic and Latin American routes on Boeing 757 / 767 / 777 / 787 |
Getting into Washington
- Metro Silver Line — direct to the airport since 2022, about 45–50 minutes to the city, with a low fare and no exposure to traffic; the best option.
- Airport bus (Washington Flyer) — direct to the city centre and the West End, with plenty of luggage space.
- Taxi / ride-hailing — about 40 km, roughly 40 minutes without traffic, and markedly longer at peak times.
- Car hire — a rental shuttle on the main terminal side.
Practical tips
- Washington has three airports: Dulles (IAD, long-haul international), Reagan (DCA, towards the city) and Baltimore (BWI), so check the three-letter code when you book.
- The Metro Silver Line takes the fear out of "40 km from the city": rail into town is far more stable than road, so choose it when time matters.
- The airport has been refurbishing its concourses and main terminal in recent years, with work under way in some areas, so routes through the building may be adjusted — follow the signs on site.
