Stockholm Arlanda Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Arlanda lies about 40 km from Stockholm's city centre and handles around 24.3 million passengers a year (2025), making it one of the largest hubs in the Nordic countries. Its four terminals split into two blocks, north and south: Terminals 2, 3 and 4 form the southern block and Terminal 5 stands alone in the north, the two linked by the indoor SkyCity walkway and a free shuttle — picking your terminal by "Schengen or not" is faster than picking it by airline.
The four terminals
| Code | Name | Main flights | Main carriers |
|---|---|---|---|
| T2 | Terminal 2 | Non-Schengen long-haul + some Schengen | Finnair, Air France, British Airways, KLM and others |
| T3 | Terminal 3 | Regional and commuter | Small regional carriers |
| T4 | Terminal 4 | Schengen low-cost | Ryanair, Wizz and others |
| T5 | Terminal 5 | The main building, both Schengen and non-Schengen | SAS, Lufthansa, Emirates and others |
How to work out where you are going:
- T5 is the main terminal — the SAS group carriers and most airlines use it, and it is the largest.
- T2 takes non-Schengen long-haul; T4 is mainly Schengen low-cost; T3 is the small regional building.
- The southern block (T2/T3/T4) and the northern block (T5) are not connected airside; changing between them means the indoor SkyCity walkway or the free shuttle.
Our diagram draws T5 as a separate building from the three southern terminals precisely to mark the distance that the indoor walkway has to cover.
Transfers and connections
- First check whether both flights are in T5 — SAS group connections are almost always made inside T5, which is the smoothest case.
- For a connection across the two blocks, add the walkway or shuttle time; allow more than 2 hours.
- Flights between the Schengen and non-Schengen areas require passport control, so add another notch to your buffer on top of that.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Points |
|---|---|
| Routes | In 2025 the airport served 163 direct destinations (138 international); intercontinental points include Tokyo (ANA) and Bangkok and Phuket (Norse Atlantic) |
| Flights | Around 164,000 scheduled and charter landings in 2025 |
| Aircraft | Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Norwegian are the main base carriers; SAS has a fleet of around 140 aircraft, mainly Airbus A320-family, A330 and A350 |
Getting into Stockholm
- Arlanda Express — about 18 minutes direct to Stockholm Central, and the fastest option; the airport has two stations: the southern one serves T2/T3/T4 and the northern one serves T5, and the free transfer between the two takes only about a minute.
- Commuter trains and airport buses — cheaper than the Express but slower, suited to travellers who are not in a hurry.
- Taxi — about 40 km; cars charging a fixed rate work out better value.
Practical tips
- With an Arlanda Express ticket you need not worry about which station: the train calls at both the southern and the northern station, so simply get off at the one for your terminal.
- Sweden has joined NATO and SAS has moved to SkyTeam, so miles and lounge entitlements are now calculated under the new alliance's rules — frequent flyers should take note.
- Stockholm also has Bromma Airport (BMA), mainly domestic and short-haul, so check the three-letter code when booking.
