Frankfurt Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Frankfurt Airport lies about 12 km from the city centre and handles around 63.2 million passengers a year (2025), Germany's largest hub. Its structure is easy to read: Lufthansa and Star Alliance have T1 to themselves and everyone else uses T2, with the SkyLine people mover linking the two. More unusual still, the airport has two railway stations — and boarding at the wrong one is the most common mistake made here.
The two terminals
| Code | Name | Gate areas | Main carriers |
|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | Terminal 1 | A / B / C / Z | Lufthansa and Star Alliance members |
| T2 | Terminal 2 | D / E | All other international carriers |
How to tell where you are: the gate letter is the concourse — A/B/C/Z are in T1, D/E in T2. Connections between Lufthansa and its partner airlines almost all stay inside T1.
Getting between the terminals
- SkyLine people mover — free between T1 and T2, every few minutes.
- Within T1 the concourses are walkable from one another; Zone Z mostly handles non-Schengen flights, so watch for passport control when connecting.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Routes | In 2025, 83 airlines flew to 275 destinations in 91 countries; 63.2 million passengers (+2.6%), with 48.7% of passengers transferring — the sixth-busiest airport in Europe |
| Flights | 63.2 million passengers in 2025, still about 90% of pre-pandemic levels |
| Aircraft | Lufthansa is the base carrier, sharing T1 with Star Alliance members; it flies A320-family aircraft and A340 / A350 / 747 widebodies on European and worldwide long-haul routes |
Getting into Frankfurt
- Regional station (S-Bahn) — underground, with commuter trains reaching the Hauptbahnhof in about 12 minutes; the first choice for the city.
- Long-distance station (Fernbahnhof) — an elevated station connected to T1, with direct ICE high-speed trains to Cologne, Munich, Berlin and other cities; the one to use for onward rail travel.
- Taxi — about 12 km, roughly 20 minutes when the traffic is clear.
- Airport bus — covers the city centre and the surrounding area.
Practical tips
- The two stations are one word apart: for the city, take the underground regional station; for high-speed trains to other cities, the elevated long-distance one — check the station abbreviation before you head down or up.
- Lufthansa to Lufthansa inside T1 is the most relaxed; a T1 to T2 connection means adding the SkyLine wait and the walk at both ends.
- Connecting between a Schengen and a non-Schengen flight means passport control, so allow another notch of time on top.
