Amsterdam Airport Schiphol terminal guideAirport Guide
Schiphol lies about 15 km from Amsterdam's city centre and handles around 69 million passengers a year (2025). It is one of Europe's most straightforward hubs: nominally a single terminal, with check-in, security and passport control all sharing the Schiphol Plaza hall and six piers (B–G) fanning out behind it. Here you will almost never end up in the wrong building — only in the wrong pier.
One terminal, six piers
| Area | Notes |
|---|---|
| Schiphol Plaza | The shared check-in hall; the railway and bus stations are on this level |
| B / C Piers | Mainly intra-European flights |
| D Pier | The busiest pier, with the most gates |
| E / F / G Piers | Mainly intercontinental and non-Schengen flights |
How to work out where you are going: the letter of your gate is the pier. D Pier has one exception — a set of gates on its lower level where you board by shuttle bus; if the screen shows a "D + number + D" style code or a gate marked bus, allow time for the shuttle.
Our diagram draws it as a single hall with six radial piers precisely to show that a connection here never means changing buildings — only covering the distance between piers.
Transfers and connections
- All connections are made behind the hall, without going through security or check-in again; for a connection between piers, estimate 15–25 minutes on foot.
- Flights between the Schengen and non-Schengen areas require passport control, so add that on top of your connection buffer.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Points |
|---|---|
| Routes | Around 300 direct destinations (about 124 intercontinental); the busiest directions are Spain, the UK, Italy, the United States and Turkey; transfer passengers are around 36.6% of the total |
| Flights | 477,552 aircraft movements in 2025 |
| Aircraft | KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the home-based carrier, with a mainline fleet of around 125 aircraft; main types are the Boeing 737, 777 and 787 (28 in total) and Airbus A330, plus KLM Cityhopper's E195/E175 regional jets |
Getting into Amsterdam
- Train — the station sits directly beneath the terminal, about 15 minutes to Centraal with very frequent services; the model of a station built into an airport.
- Direct intercity trains — from the same platforms you can reach Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and other cities without changing.
- Taxi — about 15 km, around 25 minutes outside peak traffic.
- Hotel shuttle buses — covering the main hotel clusters in the city.
Practical tips
- For the city, almost always take the train: the station is directly beneath the hall, reachable by lift, and fares are far lower than a taxi.
- A very high share of the traffic here is KLM connections; a same-alliance connection usually works in 50–90 minutes, and you should allow more when changing piers.
- You can tap a contactless credit card at the ticket gates, so there is no need to queue for a ticket.
