Airport Duty-Free Is Back: Shelves at Daxing, Kansai and Chiang Mai

In July 2023 international flights were recovering and airport duty-free was regaining a little life. A tour of three shelves — Beijing Daxing (PKX), Osaka Kansai (KIX) and Chiang Mai (CNX) — shows what three pandemic years did to travel-retail prices and selection, compared with 2020.

Inside the terminal at Beijing Daxing International Airport

In July 2023 international flights were recovering, and airport duty-free was regaining a little of its old life. Inside China, international departure shops still lagged the Hainan offshore duty-free market that had been cultivated for three years, but at least the doors were open again.

When the last airport guide was written, three years earlier, the assumption was that the pandemic would be over in two or three months and that we would be flying the world again by that summer. Travelling now, the spirits market looks different: Japanese whisky costs more and is rationed, Chinese duty-free operators treat new airports as flagship territory, and Southeast Asian shelves remain tidy and unremarkable. Three airports on this trip — Beijing Daxing, Osaka Kansai and Chiang Mai — represent three different states.

1. Beijing Daxing: a new airport's new shelf

Daxing opened in 2019 and is a key international hub for northern China. Since the border reopened its international flights have returned gradually, with China Southern and China Eastern adding routes; as a new airport it is also where Sunrise and CDF intend to build a main position, in the hope of securing better allocations of good whisky.

Three bottles carry the shelf. Dewar's 32 year old is tagged at CNY 3,555 against a domestic reference price of CNY 6,200 on the Taobao flagship store: the Double Double four-stage series uses rare stocks that may not be sustainable for many more years, and at this age and batch size it is worth taking while it is there.

Glendronach 1994 is tagged CNY 5,245 — a duty-free-channel exclusive of 1,310 bottles, heavy sherry single cask, in a wooden box, and the obvious gift. Fettercairn 23 is CNY 2,070, while the 22 year old in domestic channels already costs over CNY 3,000; this official OB at just over CNY 2,000, before any points or discount, is the value pick of the three.

2. Osaka Kansai: a shelf mid-renovation

Returning to Kansai after four years, the phrase that fits is "another world". The airport is renovating at scale ahead of the expo, and airside there was not even a decent meal to be had; duty-free and luxury stores were opening and closing in turns, and the Suntory 25 year old that used to appear in a weekly lottery had not been seen for a long time. But this is still Japan.

Yoichi and Miyagikyo Grande are ¥10,000 each (about RMB 520). These no-age-statement Nikka single malts used to sit in the ¥5,000 to ¥6,000 band; now they are ¥10,000 and often unavailable, one bottle per person. Age statements are further out of reach — Yoichi 10 has simply not reappeared in Japanese bottle shops. Japanese distilleries have restored some capacity, but demand has grown faster.

Shochu is the surprise on this shelf. Tenshi no Yuwaku, a cask-matured shochu, is ¥4,050 (about RMB 240), from Kagoshima's Nishishuzo, whose unreleased whisky distillery, Ontake, is known precisely for sherry casks; this is a genuine ten-year sherry-cask shochu. When the Japanese whisky you want is not there, it opens another door.

Sake is there too — IWA 5, Hakkaisan and Gekkeikan are all worth knowing, at prices from modest to serious, and the higher the tag the more it tends to be worth.

3. Chiang Mai: buy a bottle on arrival

Outside hubs such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Southeast Asian airports rarely offer good-value whisky, and the occasional "limited edition" is usually a Johnnie Walker Blue country edition — finding a Port Ellen Blue Label in Ho Chi Minh City in 2019 counted as real luck. But in these cities almost everything outside the terminal costs more, so buying a bottle in arrivals and carrying it with you is a sound move.

Chiang Mai's shelf is held up by Johnnie Walker, Dewar's, Royal Salute and Ballantine's — full ranges, fair prices. In the photograph the Blue Label Cities Edition is THB 12,900, Double Black 1,600, and Black Label runs from 1,250 to 1,700; a bottle of Green Label for the road is how many travellers survive Southeast Asian drinks prices. To introduce foreign friends to Chinese spirits, Moutai or Shuijingfang is on the same shelf.

4. 2020 and 2023: what changed in travel retail

The airports in the 2020 guide were stages for exclusive ages and limited single casks: Craigellachie 39, Caperdonich 25, the Changi-exclusive Dewar's Double Double. In 2023 exclusives still exist — Glendronach 1994 is a duty-free-channel-only bottling, Dewar's 32 is still on the shelf — but the story has shifted to price gaps and supply.

Daxing states the gap most plainly: CNY 3,555 for Dewar's 32 against CNY 6,200 at home. Kansai shows the supply side: Yoichi and Miyagikyo up from ¥5,000–6,000 to ¥10,000, with a one-bottle limit. Chiang Mai offers no surprises and fair prices. In three years domestic duty-free pushed its resources toward Hainan and new airports, while international departure shops are still catching up; Japanese capacity has returned, but demand rose faster, and no-age-statement bottlings are now the limit of "relatively affordable". The airport is no longer a synonym for cheap. It is a question of being in the right place when the right stock is there.

5. Practical notes: allowance, connections, checked bags

Count bottles against the allowance. On entry to mainland China, mainland travellers may bring 2 bottles of spirits over 12% ABV duty free (under 1.5 litres), while Hong Kong and Macau residents and mainland residents travelling to Hong Kong or Macau privately get 1 bottle (under 0.75 litres); tobacco is 400 cigarettes.

Connections are where it goes wrong. Duty-free spirits are bought after security and sealed in a tamper-evident bag; if a connection requires another security check, or — as in the United States — bags are re-checked before a domestic leg, the bag can be taken away. Confirm the transit airport accepts security-sealed liquid before you pay, and fly direct where you can.

In checked baggage, airlines set their own rules on alcohol and high-strength spirits must be declared; wrapping bottles in clothing and leaving room to expand is safer than packing the case tight.

Price-checking is worth the effort. Note the domestic e-commerce and flagship-store prices before you fly and decide at the shelf; Daxing printing the domestic reference price on the tag is a practice worth copying.
