Zurich Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Zurich Airport sits about 13 km from the city centre and handles around 33 million passengers a year, making it Switzerland's largest airport. Its structure is "one main building plus four boarding zones": check-in, security and passport control all happen in the same building, and the boarding zones divide into A, B, D and the remote E — Zone E calls for a ride on the underground Skymetro, and that is the only "extra distance" involved.
The main building and the four boarding zones
| Area | Notes |
|---|---|
| A / B | Schengen flights, walkable from the main building |
| D | Non-Schengen flights, inside the main building |
| E | Remote boarding zone, reached by the underground Skymetro |
Working out where you are going:
- The gate letter is the boarding zone — A / B for Schengen, D for non-Schengen, and E means taking the Skymetro.
- The Skymetro runs from the main building to Zone E every few minutes, and after security you simply follow the signs down to the platform — there is no question of ending up at the wrong building.
Our diagram draws Zone E as a long strip detached from the main building precisely to mark the stretch that only the Skymetro can bridge.
Transfers and connections
- Every connection is made within the same main building complex, with no need to leave the building or check in again.
- When your gates stretch to Zone E, count the Skymetro wait and ride into your connection buffer (about 15–20 minutes).
- A connection between Schengen and non-Schengen flights involves passport control, so add a further step on top of that.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Routes | A record around 33 million passengers in 2025; around 170 destinations, Switzerland's main long-haul hub — points reach Chicago, San Francisco, Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo and Tel Aviv. About 70% of passengers are local and 30% connecting. |
| Flights | Around 270,000 aircraft movements a year (about 740 a day); peak days in summer and autumn top 110,000 passengers. |
| Aircraft | The main base is SWISS (Lufthansa Group / Star Alliance; A220 and A320 family on European routes, with A330 / 777 widebodies on long-haul). |
Getting into Zurich
- SBB railway station — directly beneath the terminal, about 10 minutes direct to Zurich Hauptbahnhof, with very frequent trains, and Switzerland's model of station and airport in one.
- Direct intercity trains — the same station has direct services to Bern, Basel, Lucerne and other cities, with no change needed.
- Taxi — about 13 km; expensive, and better value when there are several of you.
- Car hire — desks in the terminal, suited to Alpine driving trips.
Practical tips
- Into the city, take the train essentially every time: the station is downstairs, and the fare and the frequency both beat the alternatives.
- The Swiss rail network is extremely dense, and going straight from the airport to Bern or Lucerne is often quicker than heading into the city first and changing there.
- Zurich Airport has strict night-flight restrictions, and late at night rail and bus services thin out accordingly, so check the last departure times in advance.
