Vienna International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide

Updated September 21, 2026

Vienna Airport lies about 18 km from the city centre, handles around 33 million passengers a year and is Austria's only international hub. Its three terminals stand in a row: T1 and T2 serve Schengen flights, while T3 (the Skylink section completed in 2012) is the main building for long-haul international traffic — see a gate beginning with F or G and you know you are in T3.

The three terminals

CodeNameMain flights
T1Terminal 1Schengen flights and some carriers
T2Terminal 2Schengen flights
T3Terminal 3Mainly long-haul international and non-Schengen flights

Working out where you are going:

  • Schengen flights are mostly in T1 / T2; non-Schengen and intercontinental flights are mostly in T3.
  • The three buildings are connected indoors and can be walked between; check-in desks are divided by airline and gates by destination.

Our diagram draws the three terminals as a row of connected buildings, precisely to make the point that in Vienna you do not need to set aside extra time for a change of building.

Transfers and connections

  1. All three are under one roof and transfers run smoothly; 45–60 minutes is usually enough for a Schengen-to-Schengen connection.
  2. Moving between Schengen and non-Schengen flights means passport control, so allow more than 1.5 hours.
  3. Austrian Airlines (Lufthansa Group) has its hub here, so a high proportion of passengers are connecting and the signage is clear.

Routes and flights

AspectDetail
RoutesA record around 33 million passengers in 2025; around 200 destinations, a main transfer hub for Central and Eastern Europe. Long-haul points include Chicago, Washington, Newark and Dubai, while the busiest short-haul routes are London, Frankfurt, Zürich, Paris, Amsterdam and Istanbul.
Flights240,360 aircraft movements in 2025 (about 660 a day); around 70% of passengers are local and 30% connecting.
AircraftThe main base is Austrian Airlines (Lufthansa Group / Star Alliance; 45.8% of the market, about 14.9 million passengers in 2025; A320 family narrowbodies with 767 / 777 widebodies on long-haul), followed by Ryanair / Lauda (20.5%) and Wizz Air (5.6%).

Getting into Vienna

  • City Airport Train (CAT) — 16 minutes direct to Wien Mitte, where you can change to the metro and the S-Bahn, and the fastest option.
  • S-Bahn line S7 — about 25 minutes to Wien Mitte at roughly a third of the CAT fare, and the best value.
  • Airport bus — direct to the city centre and towards Westbahnhof.
  • Taxi — about 18 km, around 25 minutes when the traffic is clear.

Practical tips

  • To save money, take the S-Bahn S7: only a few minutes slower than the CAT and far cheaper; once in the city it uses the same tickets as the metro.
  • Vienna sits in the middle of Europe and is a convenient starting point for Bratislava, Budapest and other neighbouring capitals, with frequent intercity coaches and trains.
  • Schengen visas and Austrian entry rules follow the Schengen regime, so if you are connecting on to a non-Schengen country, check whether you need a transit visa.
