Cairo International Airport terminal guideAirport Guide
Cairo International lies about 15 km from the city centre and handles around 30.9 million passengers a year (2025), making it a major gateway hub for Africa. It is made up of three terminals that are not connected to each other but are linked by a free 24-hour inter-terminal people mover (APM) — and that is the key to understanding Cairo's airport.
The three terminals
| Code | Name | Main carriers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| T1 | Terminal 1 | Gulf and African carriers and others | An earlier building, mainly international flights |
| T2 | Terminal 2 | Several international airlines | Reopened after refurbishment, mixed use |
| T3 | Terminal 3 | EgyptAir and Star Alliance members | The largest and most modern, opened in 2009 |
How to work out where you are going: EgyptAir and its Star Alliance partners are mostly in T3; Gulf and African carriers mostly in T1; and T2, after its refurbishment, handles a mix. Airline allocations change often, so go by your boarding pass and the flight displays.
- APM inter-terminal people mover — free, running 24 hours between T1, T2 and T3, about 5 minutes direct with a service every few minutes, connecting on the landside.
- Walking between the three buildings is not realistic, even without luggage, so take the people mover to change terminals.
Our diagram draws the three buildings as separate structures joined by a single track precisely to mark that inter-terminal people mover.
Transfers and connections
- First confirm which building each flight uses — EgyptAir connections are mostly made inside T3, which saves the most time.
- A cross-terminal connection means going landside, taking the APM and going through security again; allow more than 2.5 hours.
- Connections at Cairo are less efficient than at the Gulf hubs, so it is better to over-allow than to under-allow.
Routes and flights
| Aspect | Points |
|---|---|
| Routes | Cairo is a transit gateway for Africa and the Middle East, serving Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia; EgyptAir's Star Alliance network covers around 70 destinations |
| Flights | 224,303 aircraft movements in 2025 (+4.8%) |
| Aircraft | EgyptAir is the home-based carrier, with a fleet of 71 aircraft at the end of 2025 (67 passenger, 4 cargo); main types are the Airbus A320neo/A321neo, A330, Boeing 737 and 787, with the A350 to follow |
Getting into Cairo
- Taxi — about 15 km; agree the price at an official desk before getting in, and do not accept a verbal offer from someone touting for custom.
- Ride-hailing (Careem / Uber) — transparent pricing and fixed pick-up points, and the least stressful option for arriving passengers.
- Airport buses — link to the main districts of the city centre at the lowest fare, though timings and road conditions are less predictable.
- Metro — the metro extension to the airport is still at the study and construction stage, and there is currently no direct metro service to the airport, so plan on travelling by road.
Practical tips
- A fourth terminal is being planned to expand capacity, and the phased works may affect circulation inside some buildings; watch for signs on the ground.
- Book taxis and ride-hailing through the official desk or the app, and avoid getting into a car with anyone touting at the arrivals exit.
- Cairo's summers are hot with occasional dust storms; keep outdoor transfer time to a minimum around midday.
