London Heathrow terminal guide공항 안내

2026년 10월 16일 업데이트

Heathrow is one of Europe's busiest hubs, handling around 84.5 million passengers a year (2025) about 24 km from central London. It now operates four terminals — 2, 3, 4 and 5 (Terminal 1 has closed), and each terminal is closely tied to an airline alliance, so which airline you fly largely decides which building you use.

The four terminals in use

CodeNameGatesMain users
T2Terminal 2 (The Queen's Terminal)A1–A20Star Alliance carriers
T3Terminal 3B1–B16oneworld carriers
T4Terminal 4C1–C14SkyTeam and some others
T5Terminal 5Concourses D / E / FBritish Airways

Two practical consequences follow:

  • A connection within the same alliance usually stays in one building, which makes for the smoothest transfer.
  • A cross-alliance connection will most likely change terminals, so allow for it.

Note the gate lettering: T2 uses A, T3 uses B, T4 uses C, and T5 uses the D, E and F concourses. The letter itself is a clue to the terminal.

Changing terminals and connecting

Heathrow's terminals are linked by a free airside/landside transfer, but a terminal change plus a second security check is a real cost in time. Our advice:

  1. Once ticketed, confirm the terminal for both flights — do not rely on the airline name alone.
  2. For a cross-terminal connection, build the transfer and security time into your buffer; a same-terminal connection is far more forgiving.
  3. Inside T5 the D, E and F concourses are some distance apart — if your gate is in F, set off early.

Routes and flights

  • Routes — in 2025 the airport connected around 80-plus countries and about 230 destinations, one of the most connected hubs in Europe; long-haul points include New York, Los Angeles, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney and Johannesburg.
  • Flights — 84.5 million passengers in 2025 (+0.7% year on year), with 477,894 aircraft movements and an average of 1,309 a day.
  • Aircraft — main base is British Airways (T5 exclusively), followed by Virgin Atlantic (T3) and other oneworld and Star Alliance carriers; short-haul uses the A320 family, while intercontinental uses the A380, 747, 777, 787 and A350 widebodies.

Getting into central London

  • Heathrow Express — about 15 minutes direct to Paddington, and the fastest option.
  • Piccadilly line — direct to many central districts at a fraction of the price, but stops all the way in.
  • Coach — National Express long-distance services, useful if you are heading straight to another city.
  • Taxi — the black cab, available on demand, and the most expensive.

Practical tips

  • It is 24 km into the centre. Choosing between "fast" (Heathrow Express) and "cheap" (Piccadilly line) mostly comes down to luggage and arrival time.
  • Paddington connects to the Underground and mainline rail, so for destinations beyond west London the Express is usually quicker than staying on the Tube.
  • If your itinerary allows, pick flights that arrive and depart from the same terminal and you remove the terminal change entirely.
