Phuket Airport at night: the covered walkway at gate 8

Flying into Phuket from Shanghai on an international flight, the simplest way to a hotel is exactly one route: leave through gate 8, walk straight out, and you are at the Grab pick-up point.

Why gate 8

Phuket's international arrivals exits are numbered. In practice, gate 2 is confusing and hard to connect with the Grab pick-up, whereas gate 8 leads straight down a single path with no fuss. So do not deliberate — head for gate 8.

Step by step

1. Buy a Thai SIM when you land

Sort out a local SIM before leaving the terminal — you need data for the ride-hailing app and maps.

2. Clear immigration

Join the queue as usual. Photography is not allowed in the immigration area, so put your phone away.

3. Follow the signs to gate 8

Leave the terminal following the Exit signs, aiming for exit 8. The signs are brightly lit at night and hard to miss.

4. Out of gate 8, then straight ahead

Outside is a covered walkway with signs for Public Taxi, Public Bus and Ride App. Follow it straight along.

5. Find the green Grab kiosk

At the end of the walk you reach the green Grab Pick-Up Point sign and kiosk, with an arrow pointing to the pick-up area.

6. Book on Grab

Open Grab, register, link Alipay and enter your destination. Set the pick-up point to the Grab Pick-Up Point in front of you.

A few tips

  • Landing at midnight is no problem: the walkway is lit and the pick-up point is staffed.
  • Phuket Airport to Patong, Kata and the other beaches is a long drive — check the plate and model shown in the app before you get in.
  • Grab fixes the price when you book, so there is no haggling. If a driver demands more, report it in the app.
