Kuala Lumpur International Airport terminal guide공항 안내
Kuala Lumpur International Airport lies about 50 km from the city centre and handles around 63.4 million passengers a year (2025). The key to it is that "KUL" is not one building: the KLIA main terminal used by traditional airlines, its satellite gate building, and the low-cost klia2 are three facilities set apart from one another — the terminal name on your boarding pass decides directly which of them you are heading for.

Satellite view: the terminals, runways and surrounding city at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL).
The satellite image comes from Esri World Imagery (© Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics); the field and attribution are labelled in the image. This is a satellite view, not a ground-level photograph.
The main terminal complex and klia2
| Area | Name | Main carriers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| KLIA Main | Main Terminal Building | Malaysia Airlines and full-service airlines | Check-in, security, immigration |
| Satellite | Satellite Building | As above | Some international gates, linked to the main building by a people-mover |
| klia2 | Low-cost terminal | AirAsia and others | A separate building, set apart from the main building |
How to work out where you are: full-service airlines are at KLIA; see AirAsia and other low-cost codes and they are almost always at klia2.
- Aerotrain — links the KLIA main building to the satellite building; free, running 24 hours, every few minutes. When your gate is in the satellite building, take it after security.
- klia2 and the main building are not within walking distance, so you reach klia2 by one stop on the KLIA Ekspres or by shuttle bus.
Our diagram draws the KLIA main building, the satellite building and klia2 as three separate structures precisely to serve as a reminder: the "Kuala Lumpur" on your low-cost leg is in another building.
Transfers and connections
- First check whether both flights use the same complex — both at KLIA (main building plus satellite) is smoothest; a connection involving klia2 has to add the time to change buildings.
- From the KLIA main building to the satellite you rely on the people-mover, about 10 minutes including the wait, so count it into your margin.
- For a transfer across KLIA and klia2, allow more than 3 hours, especially when it involves clearing immigration, collecting baggage and checking in again.
Routes and flights
- Routes — around 70 airlines in 2025, with 40 new routes launched; coverage spans Southeast Asia, China, South Asia, Oceania and the Middle East, and long-haul points include London, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul and Dubai.
- Flights — 63.4 million passengers in 2025, up about 11% year on year; domestic traffic grew 17% and international 8.7%.
- Aircraft — main bases are Malaysia Airlines (full service, main terminal) and AirAsia (low-cost, klia2); AirAsia flies mainly the A320 family, while Malaysia Airlines uses A330 and A350 widebodies on long-haul.
Getting into Kuala Lumpur
- KLIA Ekspres — non-stop to KL Sentral in the city centre in about 28 minutes, and the fastest way into the city from the airport.
- KLIA Transit — the same line stopping at every station, with a lower fare, and you can change to other lines en route.
- Airport buses — cover KL Sentral and points across the city; the lowest fare, but exposed to road conditions.
- Taxi — buy your ticket before boarding the car; about 50 km and an hour or so.
Practical tips
- klia2 is AirAsia's main base and its facilities are utilitarian, with food and rest areas more compact than the main building's — arrive earlier still for a low-cost flight.
- The KLIA Ekspres stops at both KLIA and klia2, so you can change buildings one stop on it, more punctual than the bus.
- Kuala Lumpur also has facilities such as Subang Airport (SZB), so check that the three-letter code and the airport really are KUL when booking.
